Failed and forgotten

I have a soft spot for action figures from failed movies / tv shows and short lived cartoons. These figures for the most part are picked over and left to take up space in the clearance bins ,They sit around for years before the price drops so low that somebody finally buys them all and stuffs them in a closet. These are a few of the more interesting examples.

SeaQuest DSV  produced by Playmates in 1993.The toy line lasted for one series .I dont really remember the show to much but I know it aired for a few years .The figures are a little on the dull side and that's probably why they flopped.

Cadillacs and Dinosaurs produced by Tyco in 1993. To be fair here the Dinosaurs that where recycled from the Dino Riders did sell pretty well but the humans languished in the clearance racks.I remember seeing the humans for as low as .99 each .
Coneheads produced by playmates in 1993. These guys could still be found in the clearance bin at some KB toys stores as late 1998 priced at 3 for $5.00.

Highlander the animated series produced by Prime Time Toys in 1996. I might be wrong about this toy line .I only saw these figures one time and that was  at a comic book store. They had all the basic figures on the markdown / damaged shelf  at 3 bucks each and I assume that these either didnt have a large distribution or went right in the clearance bin and I missed them.

  1. HAHA...I had a Conehead. At the time I was obsessed with all things Batman. SO I used him as Egghead.

    1. Thats a good idea , I never thought about it but a conehead would work for a custom of either the Marvel or the DC egghead.

  3. Cadilacs and Dinosaurs was a fun cartoon and many of the vehicle toys were spectacular. I have the red cadilac that Jack drove and it has all kinds of spiffy features.

    1. I have been trying for a while to get my hands on the car but I can never find it in good condition. There is a playset on the back of the pack that looks really interesting but I have never seen it for sale anywhere. In all it was a fun line but I think it came out when the market was flooded with other toys leading to its ultimate failure.

    1. I saw the cartoon a few times early in the mornings and Im almost positive there was a commercial for the toys but they seem to have not been sold in every store or something.

  5. SeaQuest (from my like 14 year old memory at the time) was a pretty cool show. At least season 1 was, then NBC came in and did a bunch of producer changes and the show got really cheesy fast. It was hight budget for sure though. Funny that we both randomly did something with it.

    1. Yeah it was a little serendipitous ,Maybe its a sigh that its time for a reboot. I went ahead and bought the Season One dvd box set last night from Amazon so I guess Ill see what I missed out on.

  6. Four cool toylines. I had heard about them and seen a couple of toys, but thanks for putting all pictures together. It's amazing that the Coneheads toys made the whole way to Spain, although we never saw any cartoons, just a movie, and it wasn't very successful either...

SeaQuest figures look great for 1993... remind me of the last Indiana Jones figures with many articulation points, cool hand/fingers positions, and cool accs.

And I'd like to see the missing characters of Cadillacs and Dinosaurs, was Mustapha never made as a figure? Do you have a cardback image for these figures?

    1. I cant believe the Coneheads would have made it that far myself, The movie and the figures did terrible here.
The Seaquest figures are made exactly like the Star Trek figures that playmates was making at the same time. If you mix the two together in a pile they are indistinguishable from one another.
OOPPS! Thats for pointing that out I didnt even notice I left those out. I fixed it.

  7. OMG, the figure of Mustapha Cairo is really crazy! what's that mechanical leg? he looks like Dennis Rodman with a moustache... and that's why I find it quite cool.
